How to Prepare Your Gutters for Hurricane Season

A simple pre-season gutter checklist for Palm Beach County homeowners: cleaning, fasteners, downspouts and drainage.

Prepare gutters for hurricane season before a storm threatens Boynton Beach. Routine cleaning and repair help roof runoff drain, but gutters do not make a home hurricane-proof. Plan maintenance early and follow official forecasts and local safety instructions when severe weather approaches.

When to prepare

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, according to the NOAA National Hurricane Center. These dates are a planning window, not a guarantee about when heavy rain will occur. Arrange a gutter check before the season and review the system after significant storms when conditions are safe.

Inspect safely from the ground first

Look for sagging runs, disconnected downspouts, staining below joints and water pooling near discharge points. Do not climb onto a wet roof or use a ladder in wind or lightning. If reaching the gutters would be unsafe, schedule professional service. OSHA’s ladder safety guidance provides useful precautions; reading a checklist does not replace proper equipment and safe conditions.

Clear leaves and check downspout flow

Leaves, small branches and roof debris can obstruct gutters and outlets. Cleaning should address the full water path, including the downspouts, rather than just the visible gutter trough. Ask the technician to identify blocked sections and check drainage after cleaning. See Ocean1 leaf gutter cleaning for help with debris and flushing. Gutter guards can reduce some debris buildup, but inspect the guard surface and outlets too.

Check supports, joints and fascia

Loose supports, damaged end caps and leaking corners deserve assessment before heavy weather arrives. Have the installer check the attachment and the condition of the fascia behind it. Replacing a hanger does not solve underlying wood damage, and gutter repairs are not a wind-resistance certification. Discuss gutter repair and downspout services when a section is loose, leaking or not draining properly.

Follow water beyond the downspout

Check that runoff has a suitable path away from the building and that extensions or drain outlets are clear. Do not redirect water onto a neighboring property. Persistent standing water can have several causes; a French drain is not automatically the right solution. The Department of Energy’s stormwater guidance explains why the complete discharge path matters. Request a site assessment before adding underground drainage.

What to do when a storm approaches

Use official forecasts and local emergency instructions to guide your preparations. Do not leave roof or ladder work until high winds arrive. If a gutter issue cannot be addressed safely before the storm, avoid attempting an emergency repair in hazardous conditions. Once the storm has passed, inspect from the ground and stay clear of fallen power lines, unstable branches and damaged structures.

Your pre-season checklist

  • Arrange safe gutter and downspout cleaning.
  • Check loose supports, leaks and visible fascia damage.
  • Confirm discharge points are clear and appropriately placed.
  • Inspect gutter guards without assuming they eliminate maintenance.
  • Keep official weather updates and local safety guidance available.
